Jellyfish

Read: Pages 14-15 in Oceans by Johanna Rizzo.

Discuss: Jellyfish float in the ocean and eat fish. They have soft bodies with long, poisonous tentacles. They catch fish with their stinging tentacles. Jellyfish are 98% water. There are many types of jellyfish ranging in size from just a few inches across to over 3 feet across. Some jellyfish can glow in the dark. Some jellies have enough venom to kill a human.

Jellyfish on the Beach

While we were at the beach my husband stepped on one of these tiny jellyfish that was washed up on shore.  The light sting lasted for a little over a day.  The little red thing in the middle was stuck to his foot and so we looked around and found lots more of the red things in the jellyfish.

 Learn Jellyfish Facts

Jellyfish Craft

Materials:

• 2 Paper Bowls
• Watercolors
• Paint Brush
• Construction Paper
• Glue
• Different Ribbons
• Fishing Line

Directions:

1. Paint the bottom of a paper bowl with watercolors. 
   
2. Cut small circle eyes from black and white paper and glue them to the outside of the bowl.
3. Pour glue in the bowl and stick the ends of some ribbon inside of the bowl. 
   
4. Place another bowl on top with the ribbon sticking out and let it dry. 
   
5. Poke two small holes in the center of the bowl. Thread fishing line through the bowl so it creates a loop to hang it from the ceiling.
   
    

Jellyfish Lifecycle

I printed out this Jellyfish Lifecycle Strips activity for J to learn the lifecycle of a jellyfish.

Jellyfish in a Bottle

Materials:

• Transparent Plastic Grocery Bag
• Plastic Water Bottle
• Thread
• Food Coloring
• Scissors
• Hot Glue

Directions:

1. Flatten the bag and cut off the top (handle part) and the bottom part.
2. Cut along the sides to split the bag into to sheets.
   
3. Take 1 sheet and fold it like a tiny balloon to make the head of the jellyfish. Tie it with thread, but not tight.
   
   
4. Cut from the edge up to the head to make the tentacles. (they should look stringy)
5. Trim a few to have a few long and short tentacles.
6. Fill the head part about half full of water where it is tied.
7. Fill up the water bottle with water.
8. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the bottle.
9. Add the jellyfish and glue on the cap.
   
   I think I made the Jellyfish a little too big for this small bottle.  Next time I think we'll use a 2 liter bottle.
