Milk Chocolate Day

We celebrated National Milk Chocolate Day (July 28)  with a mini Hershey's Unit Study.  I did these Hershey's activities with my 1st grader and would recommend this study for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

Milk Chocolate Pies
We started off by making a family favorite, milk chocolate pies.

Ingredients:
  • 8 oz. Hershey's Bar
  • 8 oz. Cream Cheese
  • 16 oz. Cool Whip
  • 2 prepared graham crusts
  • 1/4 c. milk
 Directions:
1.  Heat chocolate and 2 tablespoons of milk in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until melted.
2.  Beat cream cheese and 2 tablespoons of milk. 
3.  Add chocolate and beat until smooth.
4.  In a bowl, fold chocolate into cool whip and blend until smooth.
5.  Spoon into crusts and freeze for 4 hours.
 6.  Add cool spoonfulls of cool whip and chocolate shavings to the top.

 Hershey's Kisses Addition
As we read the book, The Hershey's Kisses Addition Book by Jerry Pallotta, we did some of the addition combinations with our Hershey's kisses.

Comparing Kisses
Materials:
  • Bag of Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kisses
  • Big 7 oz. Hershey's Kiss
  • Kitchen Scale
  • Ruler
Directions:
  1. Set one of each size Kiss side by side. Which is bigger?
  2. How much do each weigh?
  3. How many little Kisses weigh the same as the one big Kiss?
  4. How many inches is each Kiss?

    How many inches across is the big kiss? _____________________

    How many inches across is the little kiss?_____________________

    How much does the big one weigh?_____________________

Hershey's Kisses Subtraction
As we read the book, The Hershey's Kisses Subtraction Book by Jerry Pallotta, we did some of the subtraction combinations with our Hershey's kisses.  At the beginning of the book there are some painting of Hershey's Kisses hanging on a wall.  So we decided to make our own painting of a Hershey's Kiss.

A Pound of Chocolate
We used page 27 of this Chocolate Unit Study download for this activity.
1.  How many ounces are in your Hershey Chocolate Bar? 1 1/2 oz.
2.  How many ounces are in one pound? 16 oz.
3. How many Hershey bars would you need if you wanted a pound of chocolate? 10
4. How much did your chocolate bar cost? .50
5. How much would it cost to buy a pound of chocolate bars? $5

We used page 28 of this Chocolate Unit Study download for this activity.  I bought the biggest Hershey's Chocolate Bar that I could find for this fun activity.  It weight 7 ounces.

Hershey's S'mores Cookies
Ingredients:
  • 11 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 3 regular sized Hershey’s bars, broken into pieces
  • 1-2 packages graham crackers, broken into squares
    Instructions:
    1. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, sea salt and cinnamon in a bowl and set aside.
    2. In another bowl with an electric mixer, cream butter with white and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix.
    3. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixer and combine on low speed.
    4. Fold in the chocolate chips and marshmallows into the dough.
    5. Chill dough in refrigerator for 1 hour.
    6. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease baking dish.
    7. Lay out graham crackers side by side in the dish. 

    8. Place spoonfulls of dough on graham crackers about 1 inch apart. Spread the dough slightly with fingertips.
    9. Bake for 5 minutes then remove from oven to press Hershey’s bar pieces on to the top.
    10. Bake for 5-7 more minutes or until dough is beginning to turn golden brown on the edges. Cool on a wire rack.
    11. Allow cookies to completely cool and cut with a sharp knife.
