Floating
Lemons
Materials:
- Bowl of water
- Lemons
- Knife
- Magnifying glass
Directions:
- Place a lemon in the bowl of water. It floats! Try to push it down and get it to stay under the water. I t still floats.
- Cut it into smaller pieces, they still float.
- Remove the lemon skins and see if the lemon parts will sink? They do...
- Look at the lemon skins with your magnifying glass, why do you think the lemon floats with the skin on? The skin is thick and porous that means it has lots of air which makes if float.
- What other fruits do you think would float? Oranges, limes
Lemon
Symmetry
Materials:
- Paper
- Lemons
- Knife
- Colored Pencils or crayons
Directions:
- Cut 1 lemon in half. Look closely at the inside half of the lemon. You will see that it has symmetrical lines or triangle areas.
- A line of symmetry divides a shape into two identical parts. In some cases, as with a butterfly, you'll find one line of symmetry down the middle. In other cases, there is more than one ; like with eight sections of an lemon.
- Use the colored pencils to draw a lemon on your paper. Draw the whole lemon and then what the inside looks like when you cut it in half.

When
life gives you lemons...
Discuss:
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” Lemons are sour so
when you say that life gave you lemons that means you are having a
sour (bad) day. Lemonade is sweet, so when you have a bad day you
can try to make it a lemonade day (good day). What are some
things that might happen to us that would cause us to have a bad day
and what we could do to make it better.
