Dinosaurs Day 14: Cretaceous Omnivore Dinosaurs

Cretaceous Omnivore Dinosaurs
Discuss: As you learn each dinosaur on this day look up the Dino Dictionary to see you to correctly pronounce their names, and find each dinosaur on the dinosaur classification chart that we made earlier.

Dinosaur Flashcards:

Review:

Gallimimus Information
Translation: Chicken Mimic

Diet: Omnivore

Period: Cretaceous period

Family: Ornithomimidae

Height: 11 feet
Length: 18 feet
Weight: 260 lbs

Physical Appearance: Gallimimus was bipedal; it walked on two long legs. This light-weight dinosaur had a long neck, large eyes, and a small, light skull.

Lifestyle: Gallimimus was a fast-running dinosaur with very long legs. It was a fast, agile dinosaur, probably running about as quickly as an ostrich.

Discovered by: Gallimimus fossils were discovered by a team led by Professor Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. (Find Mongolia on the world map).

Directions: I printed out this Gallimimus Dot-to-dot page for J to color.

Ingenia Information
Translation: Ingenia (Mongolia) Lizard

Diet: Carnivore

Period: Cretaceous

Family: Oviraptoridae

Height: 2 feet
Length: 4.6 feet
Weight: 80 pounds

Physical Appearance: Ingenia was a small, delicately built predator with a toothless jaw and a beak.

Lifestyle: The fact that its hands were more powerfully built than those of other oviraptorids suggest that it may have had the ability to grasp a greater variety of foods than other small, toothless carnivores of its time.

Discovered by: Ingenia was discovered by Barsbold in 1981.

Directions: Fill out the Dinosaur Research Report with the information you learned about the Ingenia.

J waned to draw a picture of Ingenia from his dino drawing book too.

Ornithomimus Information
Translation: Bird Mimic

Diet:Carnivore

Period: Cretaceous

Family: Ornithomimidae

Height: 9 feet
Length: 15 feet
Weight: 300 pounds

Physical Appearance: Ornithomimus had a relatively large brain and hollow bones.

Lifestyle: A long tail acted as a counterbalance and as a stabilizer during fast turns. Its bones were hollow. It probably ran about as quickly as an ostrich.

Discovered by: The first Ornithomimus fossil was found near Denver, Colorado, USA in 1889, and was named by paleontologist Othniel C. Marsh in 1890. (Find Colorado, USA on the world map).

Directions:
Write a descriptive essay about being a Ornithomimus living in a particular region. What would the eat dinosaur eat; would it be a meat eater or a plant eater? How big would it be? What would it look like? What kind of plants and other animals/dinosaurs would be there? What would the weather be like? Would it be warm, hot or cool? Would the climate be wet or dry? What other details would you like to add?

Therizinosaurus Information
Translation: Scythe Lizard

Diet: Herbivore

Period: Cretaceous

Family: Therizinosauridae

Height: 15 feet
Length: 36 feet

Physical Appearance: This dinosaur had sickle-shaped claws over 2 feet long.

Lifestyle: It may have used his claw as a weapon for attacking and butchering its prey, or digging up huge ant nests.

Discovered by: Fragmentary remains of Therizinosaurus were discovered in southern Mongolia

Directions: Fill out the Dinosaur Research Report with the information you learned about the Therizinosaurus.
